Sina: It used to be a desert where we are standing, but now it seems pretty good as a characteristic travel scenic spot. However, if trees are planted, perhaps this scenic spot will disappear. Do you think it rational to control the desert by doing so,?
Wang Shi: Not necessarily, why plant trees? I don’t want to destroy the existing view, for example, there are some desert plants here, and if they are removed, it is certain to cause some destruction. Though I am not an expert, I think desert control doesn’t always mean planting trees.
Sina: Another question, you have been to many places, do you think presently environmental protection is a practical concept of extreme significance to China?
Wang Shi: Precisely.
Sina: Don’t you think we should we do it after the production is developed into certain a degree? For example, it may directly influence the herdsmen's life if grazing is not allowed.
Wang Shi: The logical relation should not be like that. First of all, environmental protection is a kind of art. Suppose we manage a large amount of rubbish produced in the city, we are protecting the environment. The so called environmental protection means no destruction, besides reuse of energy. Rubbish classification here doesn’t need great amount of money, yet it is a concept, a consciousness. Concept and consciousness together form an idea. If we develop economy first, then it may be too late to do it. Third, the habit in the past is changing. In term of environmental protection, we should set about from the change of idea first, and then we should have better points to breakthrough, just as the industrial development must follow the concept of environment, including how to do this. In the course of urbanization, we should pay attention to the change of environment. Urbanization involves various fields such as capital construction, the most important is how to control the degree.
For the question you proposed, I don’t think it should be done after the economy is developed, we must pay attention to it. Another problem is how to hold, except it needs some things itself, it is the habit, and the key is habit, which China happens to fall short
