On the World Environment Day, a hundred Chinese entrepreneurs made a joint statement promising to fund the establishment of a public welfare foundation for environmental protection and sandstorm control.
Jun.5 is the World Environment Day. On this day, approximately one hundred Chinese entrepreneurs gathered together in Alxa Desert of Inner Mongolia —the major source area of sandstorms, and made a joint statement titled Alxa Statement, promising concerted efforts to establish and fund “SEE”, aiming to restore the ecological home of human beings in a step by step manner through all-round and comprehensive control measures for Alxa Desert and restriction against the outspread of sandstorms.
As a charter member of “SEE”, each of the one hundred entrepreneurs will contribute to the association RMB￥100,000 annually as public welfare funds for successive 10 years. This move not only means the formal naissance of the first and true nongovernmental public welfare organization in China, but also represents Chinese first public welfare funds formed by entrepreneurs who answer for the society —— SEE Ecological Foundation has entered the preparation stage. Chinese entrepreneurs joined hand in hand from that moment on, with a common object to bring sandstorms under effective control and restore the ecology in sandstorm areas, by starting up environmental protection projects first in Alxa of Inner Mongolia, then throughout all other source areas of sandstorms in China.
Most of the charter members came from prestigious and representative enterprises engaged in various industries. Besides, privately owned enterprises and high-tech enterprises together accounted for a considerable portion. Development history of enterprises in the world shows that as wealth accumulates and increases, entrepreneurs will actively seek a harmonious integration of economic benefit, ecological benefit and social benefit, as well as an organic combination of humanitarianism and market efficiency. This joint effort reflects exactly the reasonable maturity of social role played by Chinese entrepreneurs.
Currently, more than 1000 existing Chinese foundations are governmental charitable organizations other than public welfare funds. Over the past 20 years since reform and opening up, funds used for public welfare initiated by entrepreneurs have been a blank in China. This time, Chinese entrepreneurs, who adopt a proactive stance toward ecological and environmental responsibility, will head for the common goal of social public welfare, hand in hand, marking an unprecedented breakthrough in Chinese history.
